Mrs. Brenda McCaw - Home Page

Welcome to my home page! My name is Brenda McCaw, and I am going on my 18th year here at Iowa Valley Elementary. I am the Elementary Secretary and I also take care of our technology needs.

If you have any questions regarding your student(s), please feel free to contact me. You can reach me at 319-642-5422, email me at bmccaw@iowa-valley.k12.ia.us, or stop in at our elementary office between 8-4.

We are very fortunate to have 2 computer labs at Iowa Valley Elementary. Our SuccessMaker lab consists of 30 workstations! First through sixth grade teachers bring their students to this lab 4 times a week to do 10 minutes of reading and 10 minutes of math. Kindergarten teachers bring their students here twice a week for both reading and math. At the beginning of the school year, the students go through 'Initial Placement'. They will be presented with questions that may be very easy at times, as well as very difficult at times. This software test the students to find a level that it feels the students are ready to begin learning at. Once the student has been placed, their growth will be shown in reports that are given to their teachers weekly. These reports will also show the student's strengths, as well as their areas of weaknesses. Intervention can be done in forms of worksheets, extra time allowed to answer the problems presented to them, as well as backing up to the students to assist in the areas that they are struggling with. Parents will receive quarterly reports from the SuccessMaker lab showing the student's progress.

Our other lab consists of 26 workstations. Here the students are able to do research by having access to the internet, they are able to view digital educational videos, use educational software, as well as word processing and keyboarding. Our PTO purchased the keyboarding program, 'All the Right Type' for our students. Third and Fourth grade will be keyboarding once a week in this lab as well.

We also have a wirless lab for student and teacher use which consists of 28 netbooks.
